Sinusitis is a big health problem. It affects 31 million people in the United States. Americans spend more than $ 1 billion a year on over-the-counter medications to treat them. Sinus infections are responsible for 16 million visits to the doctor and $ 150 million for prescription drugs. People with allergies, asthma, structural blockages of the nose or sinuses, or people with weakened immune systems are at greater risk.
The symptoms of a sinus infection
A bad cold is often confused with sinusitis. Many symptoms are the same, such as headache or facial, runny nose and nasal congestion. Unlike colds, the symptoms of a sinus infection can be caused by bacterial infections. Treatment with antibiotics is often required (drugs that kill the germs responsible for the infection).
What is sinusitis?
Sinusitis is an inflammation of the paranasal sinuses. It is often caused by a bacterial infection (germ). Sometimes viruses and fungi (molds) are the cause. People with a weak immune system are more likely to develop a bacterial or sinus infection of the paranasal sinuses. Some allergic people may experience “allergic sinusitis”. Acute sinus infection lasts three to eight weeks. A sinus infection of more than eight weeks of age is considered chronic.

A sinus infection near the brain can be life-threatening if left untreated. In rare cases, it can spread to the brain.
Normal breasts are covered by a thin layer of mucus that traps dust, germs and other particles in the air. Small hairy protrusions in the sinuses sweep the mucus (and what is trapped there) to the openings that lead to the pharynx. From there it slides in the stomach. This continuous process is a normal function of the body.
An infection of the paranasal sinuses stops the normal flow of mucus from the paranasal sinuses to the throat. Small “sweepers” that look like hair get blocked when infections or allergies cause swelling of small nasal tissues. The swelling traps the mucus in the sinuses.
Some people have physical defects that contribute to the infection of the paranasal sinuses.
The most common of these defects are:
Deformation of the bony septum between the two nostrils.
Nasal polyps (benign mucous nasal growths)
A narrowing of the breasts.
People with these defects often suffer from chronic sinus infections.

Discolored nasal discharge (greenish color)
